Euphoria and Pride

Unfortunately, my memories of VE Day are a little hazy at this point in my life but my overriding memories of the occasion are one of being swept along by an enormous euphoric and totally excited crowd which, at times bordered on delirium. This, for us who were more used to the “troglodyte” conditions of Fort Southwick (UHQ – C-in-C Portsmouth) was, at first, just a little scary but after many hugs and kisses from total strangers, we began to feel a sense of pride that we had been a minute part of the momentous day and this was the joyful culmination.
